So McGloin decided to search around online, where he discovered a lesser-known fact about Apple’s trade-in program. In McGloin’s estimation, however, the laptop was in “excellent” condition, he tells The Verge, and he didn’t see any white spots when he packed it up. It’s a defect McGloin doesn’t remember ever seeing, and one that he should have noticed: typically, white spots on an LCD display are evidence of serious damage or burn-in and are clearly visible. The mysterious culprit: “display has 3 or more white spots,” the Apple Store app told him. Suddenly, McGloin was told his MacBook was worth just $140, less than half what Apple originally quoted. The situation soon changed after his laptop arrived for inspection. So McGloin packed up the device and shipped it in, expecting to receive his money in the coming weeks, which would help offset his purchase of a MacBook Air carrying Apple’s new M1 chip. He felt it was in pretty good condition, with no apparent damage to the case and a fully functioning display and keyboard.

The software engineer and San Diego native initiated the trade-in with Apple through the Apple Store mobile app, where he was quoted $350 for his used laptop. Next: Mac Studio Vs.When Daniel McGloin decided to trade in his mid-2017 Apple MacBook in February of this year, he thought he was getting a pretty good deal. Along with the M2 Mac mini, these are the entry-level Mac computers that will almost certainly be seeing updates within about a year.

The M2 chip will significantly boost graphics performance and a nice CPU upgrade without overshadowing Apple's M1 Pro. Other likely Mac computers to receive an M2 upgrade are the 24-inch iMac and 13-inch MacBook Pro.

On the other hand, there's plenty of time for Apple to update the Studio Display firmware with new Mac models before the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, so it might not be relevant at all. Interestingly, no other new models were listed in the firmware, which presumably checks for compatibility of the connected Mac. The only question is whether the Studio Display firmware indicates that this release is imminent. It would make sense for a new Mac mini to be released simultaneously to feature the same M2 processor. Gurman has suggested that an M2 MacBook Air is likely to arrive at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June along with one other Mac at WWDC but didn't know what the other Mac would be.

Houghton-Smith also speculated that the chip powering this new Mac mini would be a new M2 processor rather than Apple's previously released M1 Pro.

Apple uses designations like this internally, and the 2020 Mac mini had a code of 'Macmini9,1,' a numerical sequence that Apple rarely changes. The code includes references to various Mac models, including one with the code 'Macmini10,1'. A recent Retweet by Mark Gurman adds weight to a detail spotted in the Studio Display firmware by developer Steve Houghton-Smith.

That was 2020, and it seems likely that another upgrade will be coming within a year, possibly sooner. With the M1 Mac mini launch, Apple's least expensive Mac got a significant performance upgrade, making it faster than most Intel Mac desktops. Related: Apple's Next Mac Mini Might Put The Focus On Power Instead Of Looks Instead, it's a tiny but powerful Mac computer that keeps costs low and doesn't take up much space on a desktop, a simple but capable computer. Stick PCs are now available that take this to the extreme, yet the goal of the Mac mini wasn't to get as ridiculously small as possible.

It wasn't long before an even tinier Windows PC desktops arrived. Earlier rumors and leaks suggested that a 2023 release was likely, and it's unclear if something has changed in Apple's earlier product timeline or if its smallest desktop was always planned for 2022, as each new rumor seems to contradict the previous.Īpple first launched the Mac mini in 2005, one of the smallest desktop computers ever made. A new M2 Mac mini might be arriving a lot sooner than previously expected, possibly even at the next Apple event.
